Imagine knowing a person most of your life.

You know their flaws, the things that make them tick, the hearts they’ve broken, and the chipped pieces in their armor, and still, you love them completely… unconditionally.

That is Khalil and Ajah.

Best friends since they were eating dirt together. Their bond is unbreakable, but could they survive that one time in college?
Khalil has tried moving on from the events of the past, becoming a serial dater with no satisfaction. His recent girlfriend, Destiny, is madly in love with him, and she refuses to accept rejection from Khalil or the destruction of their relationship. But are his feelings the same for her, or is he in love with someone else?

Then there’s Ajah. While enjoying the single life, she encounters the one-night stand that haunts her for longer than she wants.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This story, a friends to lovers romance, centered on Khalil and Ajah. They were childhood friends who moved their friendship into adulthood.  As we all know adulting is hard. Trying not to be in love with your best friend is right up there with the best of them.

The author did a good job of creating chemistry and showing the reader how and why it exists between the two. You felt the chemistry in the opening scene while they were in college. When the story begins post-college and they are roommates,  Khalil is involved and both were trying to forget that one night in college that took their friendship on a slight detour.

Thankfully the story wasn't drawn out with too much angst. It progressed pretty quickly and holding my attention the entire time. Without giving anything way there were definitely some tense moments that arose as the duo navigated their relationship. I will say that I would've liked to know a little more about their background. What makes Khalil so skilled that Ajah would warn of Malachi and why would Ajah pack a gun? That scene raised a lot of questions. It was a refreshing change to see that the author kept the story about the love and romance and didn't allow drama to intervene.  The story had a couple of moments that stayed just on the cusp of drama but didn't quite make it there.

From a technical standpoint, the story was perfectly formatted. Although there were a few grammatical errors, there was nothing that would take you out of the story. I would recommend this to those who love a good positive black romance story.  This was my first read by this author, but it won't be my last. Great job!
