Grand Openings Can Be Murder is set on Galveston
Island. There’s a bit of wish
fulfillment in this, as I currently live in land-locked Dallas. I grew up in Southeast Texas, and Galveston
was just a ferry ride away. I can
remember going across to the island more than once just to do lunch at one of
the many seafood restaurants. But this
proximity instilled in me a life-long love of the ocean and all things in
it. Here are some other places I’ve
experienced the water.
1—When we visited Tokyo, we took the Himiko water bus (the
boat was designed by a guy who also draws anime) which dead ended at the beach
at Odaiba. Amused locals told us about
landmarks we passed along the way – including the bridges and the fish market.
2—Here’s me snorkeling off the Pacific Coast of Mexico. So much ocean life on that trip. When we were riding in the boat back past
this spot a couple of hours later, we saw the fin of a large shark. Glad I got to see it – from the boat.
3—I love East Coast beaches and Botany Bay in South
Carolina is one of the coolest ones I’ve been to. It is illegal to take shells from the beach
(and they monitor this) so there are huge shells everywhere – and people have
arranged some of them into photo ops.
4—This little hermit crab was one of many we saw on a cruise
ship stop in Labadee, Haiti. That was
one cruise where we were extra happy for a land excursion – we had basically
been following a hurricane for most of the trip, and it was windy and rocky the
whole way. Which gave me a whole new
level of respect for the power of the ocean.
5—The ocean and the mountains are so close together on Maui
that I got both of them in one shot.
The first snorkeling my husband and I ever did together was at Black
Rock, one of the premier dive spots in the world.
6—We once took a road trip from Texas to California,
stopping in at the Grand Canyon along the way.
Much of this takes you Route 66 – which dead-ends into the Santa Monica
Pier. To get to the end of the route,
you have to go out onto the pier.
