I Need A Goon I Can Run To
by Dymond Taylor

Synopsis - Life was hard for Q, way before he ever had an identity. Born into the sex trafficking world, Q had his fair share of drugs forced into his tiny fetal body. Only days old, he was sold and from there, his future was uncertain. By chance encounter, he was reunited with his father. It was a happy moment for them both. However, their happy reunion would be short lived. Suffering from bipolar 1 disorder and the stress of his childhood, Q is a walking time bomb.

During an attempt to escape her abusive boyfriend, Carry and her daughter winds up in his backyard. The last place anyone wants to be if they knew of the disturbed soul on the other side of those walls.

Book Review - Dymond Taylor definitely got me with this one. I felt that old special something like I did when I first read about Fire.
I was invested from the moment Q was caught "playing" in the shed with his best friend. He's complicated and extremely flawed, but my heart went out to him. The story moves quickly and the characters are a bit brutish, but as Taylor revealed more of them to us their vulnerabilities were revealed. I cannot wait for book two. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to read for the bad guy that was really a good guy.

Blood & Whiskey Series

Blood & Whiskey Series

Blood & Whiskey Blood & Whiskey by Christopher G. Metcalf

Synopsis - Donegan O'Kelly has a hard life in the Irish ghetto in Stones Gate, Michigan. He has worked to get out and into a violent bootlegging operation run by Donal O' Malley of the Badgers. If he had never killed the gangster he loaned money to, he would have been a respected member of The Badgers. Donegan killed Seamus and with that single act, and started a war between the Italians and the Irish which threatens to destroy the city.
Without divine intervention, he will see the bottom of Stones Lake and swim with the fishes.

People will die, the only question is who?

Series Review  -
This series opened with action. It gave me all the feels of a good mafia tale. I appreciated the fact that the writer did his research to ensure that the speech, neighborhoods, etc were true to the Prohibition era and the two warring cultures in the series.
Donegan let is pride get him and the Badgers into a war that would threaten their city. The story moved quickly and hit you with action at every turn. Bray delivered a well thought out plot with colorful characters who were as hot-headed and treacherous as they were entertaining (cough, Gwen).
If you like mafia-style Crime drama and action done well, you'll enjoy this series. Please get your copies below and be sure to leave a review for the author. Happy reading!

The Book of Eve

The Book of Eve

The Book of Eve The Book of Eve by Julia Blake

Synopsis - My name is Eve

But that is not my real name; rather it is the one given to me by Annaliese when she made me a part of her golden world. It was all I had ever longed for – a life of easy luxury and glamorous intentions – with beautiful people for my friends.

Yet even the best party must eventually end, and this one ended in a storm of tragedy and bitter betrayal. Overnight, my perfect life was exposed for the lie that it was… and so, I ran, as far and as fast as I could.

Now an irresistible urge is summoning me back from my lonely exile, to attend one last party - Annaliese’s farewell bash. Maybe I will find the resolution I seek, or maybe I will only find more heartbreak and deceit. And always the same question will beg to be answered:

Should some secrets go to the grave?

Book Review - Calgon didn't take me away, but Julia Blake did. This was my first read by Blake and I can't say that I was surprised that I would enjoy her work even though I had only interacted with her online. Her wittiness and creativity even a quick post or comment comes through in those often hilarious moments.

Blake pulled me in from the prologue. Who else knows the feeling of knowing your dreaming, but can't pull yourself out of it? At any rate, our heroine, or who I initially thought to be her, Melissa awakens in Jamaica where she was in a self-imposed exile. I could taste the rich cup of morning brew she sipped on despite being warned that she wasn't quite ready for it. This rich descriptive word usage really sets the tone of how the author brings the readers into the story of Melissa, Analise, a host of supporting characters, and their lavish world.  She takes us from Melissa seeing a group of friends she wanted to be a part of, reinventing herself to be someone she would like to be, to an ending that had me hoping that there might be more.  In between that is romance (Scott 😍)a funeral, betrayal, and mystery.  Blake delivers a solidly developed plot with twists and equally engaging and entertaining characters.   I recommend this book if you enjoy lavish drama, betrayal, and action with just enough romance to have you hoping you'll see more of Scott.

A Paradox of Fates

A Paradox of Fates

A Paradox of Fates A Paradox of Fates by Rebecca Hefner

Synopsis - One woman bred to save the world…

Dr. Elaine “Lainey” Randolph was born with one sole purpose: to prevent the past. With her brilliant mind and unwavering spirit, she works tirelessly to solve the equations that will finally unlock the mystery of time travel. Then, she will leave the post-apocalyptic future her grandfather created and travel back in time to prevent his calamitous actions.

When handsome military captain Hunter Rhodes appears at Lainey’s remote scientific hub, he offers her protection. But there are strings attached to the mysterious soldier’s proffer, and Lainey finds herself wary of the man who stokes unwelcome longing and desire in her unemotional heart. For Lainey is a scientist, obdurate and dispassionate toward the notion of romantic love.

As Lainey’s band of ragtag scientists and loyal soldiers endeavor to escape the dystopian future, the evil New Establishment threatens to destroy them all. In their unpredictable timeline, the nefarious regime has become all-powerful and will stop at nothing to ensure complete world domination…

Book Review - So, I'll be the first to admit that while I enjoy paranormal and fantasy, I'm not huge on dystopian and Syfy. But, I have to admit ai wanted to see if the author would make me a convert. Hefner did a good job of world building although for this reason, the novel didn't engage me from the onset, because it was a bit slow. Yes. Yes. I know. It's unavoidable when the author is pouring her creativity into a new Syfy series. However, once we were introduced to the characters, and to this new world, the story picked up. The plot is complex and interesting and in full swing by the end of Book 1. I think Hefner has created a new world that I for one am looking forward to experiencing fully. Found Love in a Rider

Found Love in a Rider

Found Love in a Rider Found Love in a Rider
by Monica Walters

Synopsis - Malachi Henderson isn’t a stranger to hard work or the country. However, trying to get his life on track from his self-destructive past has taken time. Finally embarking upon what he really wants in the rodeo arena while receiving help from the best to do it, he realizes some things in his love life have to change as well. In the midst of those changes, he meets the woman that he feels he’s supposed to do life with. Before even getting to know her, he believes they are meant to be. Convincing Danica of that seems to be a slight task, though. With the help of a loving family, his career is on track, but what will it mean without someone to share it with?.

Danica Collier is in love with love. She’s fascinated by everything it encompasses, which is why she’s confused as to why it eludes her. As a Senior in college, she’s preparing to enter her career field and feels a relationship with the right man would complete her. However, when she meets Malachi Henderson, despite the initial attraction to him, she wonders if getting to know him would be worth her time. Wasted energy is something she has no patience to endure anymore and she wants to be sure that a relationship with him is something she can handle.

Book Review - Malachi is giving Storm a run for his money as my new favorite. Jeez Monica! I feel like the author had some pent up sexual energy and poured into Malachi and decided to add in the bullriding AND that he is a God-fearing man. (keep away the impure thoughts, keep away the impure thoughts)
Okay. The author continued to build on this country community that makes country boys and their dusty boots sexier than they have ever been.
Great character development. The chemistry between Malachi and Danica was so well written. The plot moved at a moderate pace and I was engaged from the onset. If you like your country boys full of melanin, sex appeal, and humor, you'll love this addition to this catalog. You can get your copy below and support the author by leaving a review.

Monday's Not Coming

Monday's Not Coming

Monday's Not Coming Monday's Not Coming
by Tiffany D. Jackson

Synopsis - Monday Charles is missing, and only Claudia seems to notice. Claudia and Monday have always been inseparable - more sisters than friends. So when Monday doesn’t turn up for the first day of school, Claudia’s worried.

When she doesn’t show for the second day, or second week, Claudia knows that something is wrong. Monday wouldn’t just leave her to endure tests and bullies alone. Not after last year’s rumors and not with her grades on the line. Now, Claudia needs her best - and only - friend more than ever. But Monday’s mother refuses to give Claudia a straight answer, and Monday’s sister April is even less help.

As Claudia digs deeper into her friend’s disappearance, she discovers that no one seems to remember the last

Book Review Monday is missing and the only person who seems to care is her friend Claudia. This story takes us through Claudia's journey to find her friend and still live the life of a "normal" 13-year-old. The story was a slow listen. The author drops clues into Monday's home life and the terror she and her siblings had to endure at the hands of the mother.  This story if nothing else highlighted a couple of things for me. It highlights how adults often dismiss the concern and anxiety of children. It raises the question of community and government responsibility for our wellbeing. I will say the "after" that occurred once Monday's whereabouts were discovered was a bit confusing and a bit drawn out. At any rate, I think this is a worthwhile read or listen. The narrator Imani Parkes did such a great job voicing this story. I would recommend this to those who like emotional, slow reads.  You can get your copy by clicking the image below.

What Happens in this House Stays in this House

What Happens in this House Stays in this House

What Happens in this House Stays in this House What Happens in this House Stays in this House
by Lady Lissa

Synopsis -
Everyone has heard the saying at least once in their life, "What happens in this house stays in this house". Imagine being raised in a household and hearing those words over and over again. Raymond Kramer has anger issues but having grown up in a house where his parents drilled the same motto in his head when he was younger. How Raymond dealt with his kids proves to be a bit more drastic than other parents, but he saw nothing wrong with it. Having his kids fear him was more important than their love or respect.
The Kramer kids are just trying to do what other kids do… have sleepovers, play football, talk on the phone. But their parents are not having it. No dating. No phone. No computer. No fun. When push comes to shove and the kids start doing their own thing, it proves to be more than they bargained for. Sneaking out of the house is a definite no no, but Unique is in love and does it anyway. What happens when sneaking back in one night gets her caught up? What will happen when her parents discover that she has a boyfriend? Who will suffer because of it? What will happen to this family when hell breaks loose? Find out what happens in this novel that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Book Review  -
This story took me back to a story I heard a long time ago where both parents believed in this type of "discipline" and saw nothing wrong with it. The home life of Ronnie and his siblings was heartbreakingly painful to endure. Under the guise of "keeping the kids inline", the parents (mostly the father) had extremely strict rules that all the kids regardless of age had to follow.  If the rules were broken, then the punishment would be swift and severe. The author did an excellent job of painting a vivid picture of this home and showing readers how that simple messaging to your family that "what happens in this house stays in the house" can be detrimental to one's very survival. Yes, there was some repetition, but with such powerful messaging it didn't take me out of the story. 3.5 rolled to a 4

The Trouble Consultants Series: Havoc & Mayhem and Major Havoc

The Trouble Consultants Series: Havoc & Mayhem and Major Havoc

                              Havoc and Mayhem   Major Havoc

The Trouble Consultants Series by
Derrick A. Bonner

Synopsis -Once upon a time in Brooklyn, there was a man you could go to if you were in trouble and needed help. He'd listen to your story and make a judgment. If he thought you were wrong, you were out on your ass. But, if he thought you were wronged then you never had a better friend.
The year is 1988. Ronald Reagan is president. The music of the urban streets known as Rap has proven to be more than just the passing fad it was brushed off as. Everyone dressed fresh, is sick with Pac Man fever and Brooklyn is in a state of emergency due to a new wave drug called 'crack', which is turning people into addicts at an alarming rate.
Enter Tommy Strong a smooth-talking, rough-riding, flyy-guy who reaffirms action in and out of any woman's bed or against any dude's head. Known as Havoc on the mean streets of the borough that's thorough, Brooklyn, he leases himself out as a Trouble Consultant, ridding neighborhoods of punks, pimps and pushers for a profit.
Tommy loved the highly profitable, adrenaline rush, lavish and sublime lifestyle. Arrogantly causing him to believe he was untouchable. That is until the predator became the prey when under the leadership of a mysterious criminal mastermind his deadliest enemies called a truce and joined forces to hunt and eliminate their common foe. And if things couldn't get any worse, it all goes down while he's been left in charge of watching his adorable younger sister Tatiana nicknamed, Tee-Tee who happens to have special needs.
Armed with brute strength and his loyal to the end partner Mayhem, Havoc strikes back in a series of wild car chases, shootouts and bone-crunching fistfights as he uncovers the horrific truth behind who and why he's been marked for death.

Book Review - The "trouble consultant" life is a dangerous one, especially when you don't know who wants to see your demise. . I enjoyed this series. From the first chapter, I was engaged. I loved the way the author weaved in old school hip hop to drive a point home in a scene. The music was the best supporting character here. This story took me back to my youth and I loved it. It also kept my adrenaline racing with the fast-paced action sequences. The author did a good job with character and plot development. He made sure to set up the framework for an entertaining story. Just when one issue was handled in book one, book two introduced a set of twins that no one wanted to cross. If you want a gritty, street tale without your typical "dope boy" or "kingpin" at the helm, you'll enjoy this story. You can get your copies by clicking the images below and support the author by leaving a review.
Sidenote: I can't wait to hear this on audible and see it on the small screen.

Craving an Atlanta Dopeboy This Christmas

Craving an Atlanta Dopeboy This Christmas

Craving an Atlanta Dopeboy This Christmas Craving an Atlanta Dopeboy This Christmas
by Uniquely Lashay

Synopsis - Qulera Black has been singing in her own key as long as she can remember. She isn’t your average chick, and has the type of beauty no man can resist. Better known as a plus-sized China Doll, her voluptuous curves are in all the right places, but behind her perfect smile, cornbread fed fatty, confidence, and a positively matching aura, lies who she truly is—a woman who came up in the trenches of the hood. She’s strong, fearless, independent, gutter, and above all, loyal. The only thing that ever gave her loyalty back, was her music.

Christmas is here, and it may not bring Qulera cheer, as it’s haunted her since she was a young girl. She gave up hope that she could have the Christmas she always deserved, especially after her life starts spinning out of control.

Book Review - The story moved very quickly. The relationship between Sleepy and Chyna was in play prior to the beginning of the story. They were hit with 2 major conflicts that brought them together and strengthened their relationship.
I think the author had a good concept. There was not a lot of time spent on character development or adding a great deal of substance to the story. But, it was a nice change to see a plus-size heroine being the love of someone's life as well as desirable, and not the butt of jokes or the comedic sidekick. If you want a quick surface romance read, you may enjoy this story.

About

Recent controversy aside, a date sees a report as a tactful check. Their file was, in this moment, a succinct panther. A gondola is a cristate bail. An unfree kimberly is a drive of the mind. Authors often misinterpret the buzzard as a cocky gate, when in actuality it feels more like a printed wall.
